The Griffon, Alpengeist, Lock Ness Monster, Apollo’s Chariot.
For anyone who has been to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg , VA , you will recognize that list as the names of the four roller coasters at that amusement park. You may ask how it is that I would be aware of them. Well when you travel to such a place with an ‘almost’ sixteen year old granddaughter and want to spend time with her – well, you will find yourself being taken 205 feet into the air, where you will be mercilessly eased over the edge where you will stop for a few looooong moments before plunging 90 degrees straight toward the ground racing at speeds of 70 miles an hour. And that is the first ride, the Griffon. You will then find your self climbing to 195 feet before hurtling through six staggering inversions at speeds up to 67 miles per hour. And that is the second ride, the Alpengeist. Two down, two to go, but I will spare you the gory details of the others. Let this post attest to the fact that they are all survivalable.
In all honesty, I am the roller coaster fanatic in the family. For years I had been trying to coax Leah into joining me as we vacationed at Busch Gardens , but she would not even consider riding such a thing with ‘crazy’ grandpa. Then as so often happens, she took a couple of school trips to Busch Gardens with her friends and suddenly the fear was gone. It is funny how grown up you can become when you hang out with your peers at an amusement park.
This trip was therefore the first time I realized my dream of sharing the joys, fears, and screams of life on the ‘fast track’ of a roller coaster with my grand daughter. At the beginning of the day, our goal, which I had never been able to achieve on my own, was to ride all four roller coasters in one day. Six hours later, at the end of a very long day, we found ourselves untangling our hair and climbing out of our seats aboard Apollo’s Chariot after experiencing the 4 G climbs and the weightless wonder of floating airtime. We had done it! Four of four in one day! It was a memorable day for me, and maybe my last opportunity to do it with her. After all, at sixteen, how many more days will she want to spend with grandpa riding roller coasters when there were so many young buff guys hanging around who would have given anything to be strapping themselves into a seat next to her.
